loose steering

loose steering

On my 1992 F-150 5.8 4x4, my steering is starting to get a little loose. Looking at the diagrams it looks like the weakest spot is either the gearbox itself or the coupler. What should I look at first?

Before even trying to replace those, have you checked the other steering components to see if they're worn like the tie rod ends, pitman arms, idler arms, etc? All of those parts can make the steering feel loose, and they're a lot cheaper to replace than stuff like the gearbox.

Yes, just had the tires done and alignment.

The 92 has the TTB, correct? The radius arm bushings will make it steer weird.

A less than reputable shop will sell you an alignment with the parts that Pizzaman listed needing attention, then when you complain change them and charge for a new alignment, hope this isn't the case. Also if the toe in isn't right it can make it feel either loose of like something is dragging.

Did the alignment shop mention any parts that need attention?

Shop said everything was tight and straight. It is a 22yo truck, so I'm sure something needs adjustment. I did have the GF turn the wheel with the truck off in neutral. The pitman arm did not move, but the steering shaft did a little. Not much, but that may be what I'm feeling.

Well, I adjusted the worm gear in the steering box and that fixed it. I know it's a 22yo steering box and it probably should just be replaced, but for a temporary easy fix, it's done.

Nice! I've had the same issue as well, I may have to try that this weekend. I don't want to R2 the gearbox because I am doing a retrofit later this year...this my be just the ticket to get through without all the slop in the steering.
