Secret to VSS replacement?

I have been getting a VSS code so I cleaned the connector after I found it on the tranny. That helped some, it didn't trip the CEL every time I drove it, but it was still coming on. I had some time today, so I figured I would get the old one out and get the new one in. Sadly, that is not the case. After fighting it for a couple hours all I have is a stub of what is left of the old VSS sticking out of my transmission. My truck is a 1994 with the R470EW.

And your VSS is in the top front of the differential housing

I thought so too, but I have no wires back there.

The tranny mounted VSS is for the 4x4. The speedo/abs/trans control VSS is mounted on the top of the rear diff drivers side of the yoke.

Take a picture of what you have if you can.

Ok, so I was wrong, but right. I do have some wires on the rear axle, but the connector is not the same as the VSS that all the parts stores have for sale. The connector that fits and the similar looking sensor is, or was, sticking out of the top of my tranny. Yes, I do have 4x4, but I do not believe that I have abs, none of the fuse locations have any wires in them. As for a pic, not much to show cept a fubar'd sensor, just a little bit a wire sticking out of the housing stuck in my tranny. I hate rust!

I am starting to think that it may be the result of the corrosion of the two different types of metals, aluminum tranny and steel sensor housing. I did get it to spin some just before the exterior parts decided to part ways. Did I mention I hate rust!

All '87+ F-150s and Broncos have rear abs. '93+ Broncs even stepped up to 4wheel abs.

Anyway, like I said before you need this part which is different than the 4x4 speed sensor.

Ok, but that's not what the code was for. The code was a tranny VSS code. So, do I have to tear down the tranny to replace it? This is the part I am trying to replace:

Seems to me that it should be a simple unbolt of the bracket pull out the old sensor and insert new one, making sure the square lines up with the tranny.

What was the code exactly? I wasn't aware of the computer being tied into the 4x4 speed sensor, but it does require the rear axle abs signal.

And yes, it should slide right out.

I don't know which one it was, had a friend pull them, but here are the ones I have written down:
116, 121, 327, 36, 12, 1, 124

The code still could be in the truck yet, haven't reset since the last time I changed out some sensors.
Also, it was interesting that I had both 2 digit and 3 digit codes. The oldfuelinjection website gave me the impression that the 2 digit codes were for OBD I and 3 digit codes were used in OBD II. Maybe it is due to my truck having the mass air?
