Have you checked the OBD2 for codes?

The "crank sensor" to which you are referring, is that the sensor on the damper pulley or the PIP sensor in the distributor?

The sensor on the damper pulley is merely a misfire sensor. It triggers a code when a power pulse occurs too far out of the expected range. It has absolutely nothing to do with operating the ignition. That is done by the PIP (Profile Ignition Pickup) Sensor which is inside the distributor.

That sensor is NOT the crank position sensor on a 96 4.9.
The crank position on your engine is sensed by the PIP sensor in the distributor.

Get a hold of a scanner and pull the codes.
Then you'll know instead of guessing
