My friend Robert has an old Blue and White '88 Custom with the 302 in it, and before he bought it for $800 back in 2000/'01, it had sat in a wooded field for 8 years. Took us three hours to get her started, but she hasn't quit since. A '92-'96 300 or 302 would be solid engines, with the 351 being the power beast, as already mentioned.

Inherited my Dad's '95 I6 (and last nine notes--I paid more a month on that basic work truck than I'm paying for my current rig lol) in '99 with 75,000 on the clock after reverse blew out in the tranny. We were pulling a big front-deck Yazoo lawnmower with it on a 16 foot trailer on a daily basis. I ran that truck myself up to 203,000 before selling. The guy that owns it (since Dec '03) has yet to get her up to 300,000...but she'll make it. Prolly outlive my current truck lol.
