94 Cluster swap help

My cluster on the current truck works fine. It was replaced by the previous owner but the mileage doesn't reflect what the truck actually has on it. So I found one with almost the exact mileage to the truck. Did the installed today and all the gauges work fine but the illumination doesn't work for some reason. According to the seller, this cluster is a 94-95 so it should be plug and play. I put the old one back in and it lights up fine. Any thoughts on this?

Everything was clean. I emailed the guy that sold it to me. He said that my part number was different. But should all 94-95 cluster be interchangeable? My previous one was w/o tach and so is the new one. From what I can gather, people have swapped without any issue. Things like the battery light, engine light would work but no illumination.

I thought 94 and 95 had different pinouts. I seem to recall that 93-94 are the same and 95-96 are the same but different from the earlier years.

You do know that you can swap only the PSOM module and leave the rest of the gauges alone?

92 and 93 iare plug and play, same with 94 and 95, but 96 stands alone. A 92-93 cluster can be installed in a 94-95 but some wiring mods must be made. Check your connector on the cluster for corrosion or a busted pin.

Man, I uninstalled and re-installed like 4 times yesterday but still no luck. I emailed the guy that sold it to me and he stated that I have to get one with the exact part number as mine to get it to work. It's going to be hard to find one with the same part number for this low mileage. I check over everything yesterday. No corrosion, no loose parts or anything. It got to be with the different wiring or something. I'm just not experience enough to figure it out on my own.

Just pop the PSOM out of the new cluster and install it in the old cluster then put the old cluster back in.

5 minutes if you're slow.
Take the covers off the 2 clusters, pull out the PSOMs and swap them
"Re-assemble in reverse order."

Thanks a lot for the suggestion. It worked. Should have replaced all the lights while I was in there.

Took the truck out today and noticed something. The speedometer needle is all over the place. Anyone has any idea why that is? Speed is definitely not accurate as the needle kept jump up and down.

How was it before?

If it was Ok before then the PSOM may be FUBAR

If it was a problem before then you may need to pull and clean the VSS in the top front of the diff housing

It was fine with the old psom. Not sure why it does this now. All the other gauges are perfect.
