4x2 to 4x4 conversion '82 f150 302 w/ C6
I don't need anyone to suggest that I should just buy a new truck because I'm not going too. I know that if I go to any mechanic in this area and suggest this idea they will tell me I'm an idiot. But I love this truck and the last thing I want to do is get rid of it. The 4x2 has limited it however. I have a beach house and drive on the beach regularly but can never take my truck cause the rear end sinks like a stone in the sand. My dad has a lease that requires 4x4, ther family has a large ranch, etc. There are plenty of situations 4x4 would be useful for me and I want it anyways so if I'm ever in a bind, I have it. I've been reading up on C6 conversions and I'm confsed on what to do. I don't know whether to replace the trans or not because some say there is an adapter that goes between the trans and the transfer case. I also don't know whether to replace the front axel or not, I know of solid front axel swaps but I also read up on a guy who simply bolted everything on the to the existing I-beam suspension. I already know the route i'm going to go for parts would be a junkyard the question is what I need. And the trans on the truck has never been replaced so if I needed to replace it to successfully convert the truck to 4x4, I would still consider. This is never going to be used in hard-core rocky terrain or anything, its the gulf coast: mud, sand, and flat as far as you can see. Please help! Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
Yes, the trans needs to be completely torn down and the yoke swapped for a splined output shaft and the tailhousing swapped for a transfer case mount. Better off just finding a rebuild 4x4 unit and transfer case from the start.
You can bolt for bolt swap in a Dana 44 TTB inplace of your 4x2 twin I beam suspension, but the TTB sucks, so I would never recommend swapping it in. I only swap them out for F-350 style solid Dana 60s. If you don't want to change the rear axle to match 8lug as well, search for pre '80 solid Dana 44s from half tons or Broncos. Fullsizebronco.com has a very very in depth SAS forum with exactly how to run a good SAS.

Thanks, I think if I go through with it I'll look for an entire 4x4 unit: trans, transfer case, and all. It'd be from a junkyard so I'd probably have it rebuilt. Also, I know that I'd have to get the rear driveshaft from the 4x4 along with the front shaft as it would be a different length from my current one correct? Also, what's the matter with the TTB suspension? I've heard people bash on it but never knew why. The possibility of a bolt for bolt swap is just really attractive to me. And if I put a TTB in the front, would the rear axel also hav to be swapped? And would the truck have to be leveled or lifted to any extent for the front driveshaft to clear any engine components? Thanks so much for the help
For what you said you want to do with your truck, the TTB would be just fine. Also the least expensive way to convert.
The TTB has limits as far as amount of lift and travel. But as a stocker it will roll many many miles.

Thanks. As I said, I'm not a hardcore offroader. And I'm on a budget at the moment. All the sites that were bashin on TTB were really harcore competition type people. I'll probably find a 4x4 in a junkyard and take everything i can from it: front axel/suspension, trans, transfer case, drive shafts, and maybe even rear axel and rims. I'd have everything cleaned/fixed and the trans rebuilt. Do you know of any mods I'd have to make to the height?

What about the floor pan it's different on the center hump, would a body lift be needed? Or is there even a difference in the 4x4 tranny that requires the floor pan to be taller on the hump? I too am considering the stock swap. Thanks
Floor pan is the same, just knock out the cutout for the shifter. Too bad yer in Texas, I have two complete TTB setups sittin' here waitin to be scrapped. The rear gear will have to match the front gear of the donor you put in.

I don't really know how to explain this but on my parents pickup the center hump is different it basically has a hump that is the same as mine but then there is a smaller hump on top of that about 2" or 3" high sorry if this sounds stupid
