Since I've been looking for an exhaust leak. I'm kinda confused about the EGR piping on this Model. Most EGR valves are hooked to the intake and exhaust manifolds, hence (Exhaust Gas Recirculation). On this Model, the outlet is hooked to the upper intake with a flange (normal), but the tube that normally goes to the exhaust manifold is threaded to the lower intake. Can someone explain how the pipe in the lower intake is getting to the exhaust gas? Even when operating the engine for over a half hour, the EGR and tube never get warm. No engine check light, so i assume the EGR valve is operating.

The heads are built with a journal connecting the exhaust ports coming to a T in the center of each head that feeds a journal in the intake manifold casting. The EGR pipe taps that journal. Read this caption:

But what does this have to do with your exhaust leak? Is the EGR pipe leaking? This is much more common:

The easiest way to pinpoint an exhaust leak is to stuff the tailpipe with rags & listen for the hissing or huffing FORWARD of the muffler with the engine idling. Any leaks on or behind the muffler that are only detectable this way are insignificant.

Thanks for the information. It's my son's truck, just bought it with 190,000 miles on it. Runs good. but the exhaust leak has been getting bigger daily. I'm 62 and never had a Ford product titled in my name. A grudge that goes way back, that I won't get into. Thanks again for the input
