Buying first 4.9 powered truck and have a few ?'s
I would just get a jy radiator then, unless you really wanna shell out the bucks for a new one there are some nice ones out there, except for the summit ones, I have heard some bad stuff about those ones.
You will at least need a 302 5 speed computer, idk if you'll need the whole wiring harness or not. You might just be be able to skip the trans sensors on the auto harness.

The donor truck is automatic and the new is standard. I expect to buy some parts for that. I also need a new radiator any way. The donor truck has a framing stud through it. But I'm sure everything else is there. I think the only other purchase I will make is a huge bottle of aspirin.

Not trying to flame anyone but this is what I'm going to do. Why? Cause it's my truck(s), my hands, my time. I don't have anything against the 4.9 or those who have them. It's simply not what I want for this truck. I have no idea what I'm gonna do with the sixer. It may be used in another project at another time. Perhaps a late 50s early 60s effie 4x4 with the fuel injected 300 for a pulse."You will at least need a 302 5 speed computer, idk if you'll need the whole wiring harness or not. Yes I know how to "quote" but its a lil difficult on an Android.
I've heard that there is a "bypass plug" on on manual equipped trucks because it was cheaper to make one harness than two. Idk. If that's the case I'm sure I could utilize it on the 302 harness. If not, I'm sure I can find the right computer on eBay, Craigslist, here, jy, Ford, or parts store.
I hope to be able to show off the progress as I go along.
I am not arguing you're change of motors at all. I would not do it, but I also don't have a built 302 sitting around waiting to go. I do not know about the wiring harness for fact, but it makes sense.
I just got a computer in a jy, not the correct code but it works. I do not know what you would want to do there, I guess compare youre engine codes from the 302 computer and get one with the same engine codes but a manual trans.
Or go to a jy and find a truck with a 302 5 speed of the same year as the donor truck but again a 5 speed.
Catch my drift?

Relax Russo, I know you weren't arguing about the swap.
I was simply making a statement towards my reasoning for this project. It was more about having the time and hands to do it than anything else. There is so much left to interpretation when a conversation is nothing but letters on a screen. So I can easily see why you might have thought otherwise. Apologies. But on the same note. How many times have you seen someone express an idea that was new or "out of the box" that was instantly slammed because it wasn't the "norm?" Only a couple times have I seen someone given praise for doing something new. Like when that guy (manual150 I think) put stacks on a gas v6, there were pages upon pages of people thinking he was a moron and only a few that actually saw the effort. I personally thought he pulled it off quite well for something that hadn't been done! Would I have done it? Probably not. Maybe I'm a bit different in the fact that I appreciate a thought that turns into a plan, a plan that turns into an effort, and an effort that turns into a complete work. When I see a custom vehicle of any kind, I study it. I look at it in detail to see what has or hasn't been done. I see the hard work, the once vision in the minds eye made into something tangible. When I first bought that 90 a little over a year ago. It was nothing but an old farm truck. It had tube steps, a chrome air gate, stock wheels, sido exhaust that hung way to low, and a redneck "Ain't Skeered" sticker on the rear window. I took that truck from what it was and gave it a whole new look and it was different. Then a tornado came along and gave it a botched Tara Reid plastic surgery look!
I can respect anyone's opinion, that's what makes them individuals. But when someone says something, despite their feelings, just to be "mainstream" or on the "bandwagon," the respect tends to wane. Think for yourself and nevermind the critics I always say.

2. I might as well get the good out of the m5od.
3. The stick is much lighter and will put more power to the ground. Automatics tend to rob a little performance.
4. The m5 has a overdrive ratio of .68:1, slightly higher than the overdrive in the e4od of .71:1 which would mean lower engine rpm on the highway. Not much but still.
5. Because that's what I want darn it.
Maybe your right. I just tried looking for my reference and I can't seem to find it. That looks poor on my part.
Is there a chance that earlier models had a higher overdrive? It wouldn't be the first time I was mistaken and it probably won't be the last.

All Mazdogs have an 0.80:1 OD
It's the T-5 from 5.0 Mustangs that had the 0.68 OD.
Be aware that the 5.0 and 4.9 flywheels are different and cannot be interchanged. The 4.9 uses a zero imbalance; the 5.0 uses a 50 oz-in imbalance.

Ok I was mistaken about the ratio. thanks strangeranger
Either way, as of right now the m5 is the better option for the time being. Sure it will take a few bucks to get it done but thats the case with anything if you want it bad enough.
