The truck would randomly not start when i turned the key, sometimes it would, sometimes it wouldnt, but given a few tries she always fired right up. If I had the steering wheel tilted all the way up, it wouldnt start. but if it was mid way or all the way down it would. Now, when i turn the key nothing happens, itll go into auxilliary power, the radio will come on but when i turn the key all the way it will not engage the starter. ignition switch or what?

 

Actuators. They're 2 small pot-metal parts inside the column head that join the lock cylinder (key) to the ignition switch (wires), and they're notorious for breaking. They're even more notorious for being PsITA to replace, so call around to your local indpendent shops & used car lots for the name/number of a mobile steering column specialist who will rebuild yours for ~$100. That's about what a working used column would cost (before installation), and you wouldn't know how long it would last before you'd be right back here. The actuators are available online, from Ford, and at many parts stores for $15-50.

Until then, remove the plastic column shrouds between the wheel & dash, and push the operating rod forward for start/run, and back for off/lock/accy.

 

i just replaced mine in a 90 f150 same prob it was a pain to replace. u got to pulle the center of the wheel out the wheel then take the plinker arm out and then the binker light switch out then take the housing that has your key in it out then you can get to the actuator u will need a small punch to get the pin out then lift the starter arm off then u can fenagal the actuater out and replaceand put everything back in the way it came out. i actualy had to trim my actuater down because the shaft was a little to tall but all in all it took me about an hour and a half from pullin my truck into my garage to backing it out. got the actuator for $10 at advance auto

I think I paid like 12 bucks for my actuator a few months ago, I cut mine so you no longer have to push the little handle to turn the key off, but that also allowed me to get the actuator in without dropping the column. The worst part is that little ***** of a roll pin.

 

i figured it out finally, it was the ' actuator switch , or ignition switch' in auto zones little data base, basically the little switch that the rod pushed when you turned the key. little bastard was fried. shes good to go now, thanks guys

 

That would be the ignition switch.
