'94 Gear shift issues

I just bought a 1994 F150 and it's great except for a little quirk.

When you kick it into Drive you have to go all the way to second gear, then click it up to Drive before it will kick into gear. It's not a horrible thing but I'd like to fix it. Any idea what is broken that would be causing this? It's an automatic 2WD.

I'm sure I can repair it if I can find out what's broken.

Pics can be seen here if that helps:

In the future, you need to be a bt more specific than just "automatic" I looked at the pix and it's a 4.9 I6 which means your tranny is an E4OD.

Once you get it into gear does it work flawlessly or are there other issues?
Is the light on the OD on/off button on the end of the shift lever flashing?

If the answer to both of these questions is that there are no other issues, then it could be something as simple as the TRS (transmission range sensor aka MLPS or manual lever position sensor) needing adjustment. It's really impossible to say without running through the diagnosis routines.

Thanks a lot guys, I apologize for not giving enough information. I'll check out the link Steve posted and see if that helps.

Again, thank you! I'll be back to let you know if I was able to get it working correctly.

It drives great once I find Drive. and no the OD light does not flash. The only light that flashes is my airbag light for some reason. I'm sure it's related to my horn not working but I figured I'd start with the gear shifting issue.
