well i'm a duramax driver, but i picked up this beauty for 500 bucks yesterday...just couldnt pass it up...cranks great, runs great, blows cold air, has had oil changed every 3000 miles...has 230k miles on it...i love it!...cant wait to start tinkering with it...

i actually picked it up to have something for me and my old man to tinker on...i look forward to picking some brains on here...

You should also familiarize yourself with all the other ID tags, stickers & labels, and photograph them before they degrade any more. Regardless of anything else you find, I highly recommend the mod described in this caption for all pre-'92 EFIs:



If it lacks any options that you want, they're easy to find in junkyards & add, so don't feel like you're stuck with what you bought. You can easily modify it with stock parts, and make it much more comfortable.

thanks guys...its an old bird thats for sure...but i actually have the logs since this thing was born of oil changes every 3k miles, regular tire rotations and other maintenance...pretty cool deal...

anyhow, there are a few things to do on this thing right off the bat:

- entire rear lights dont work (brake, reverse, blinkers), sounds like maybe fuses or something with a wiring harness

- small oil leak, not sure if its coming from oil or tranny, im thinking maybe the pan gasket?

- coolant leak somewhere, have to watch water level every few days...im thinking maybe its leaking near the water pump?...may need to replace it

- stereo is out...no problem there i can rewire it

- here is a weird one...i have to push up on the steering wheel in order to get the ignition to start up...it starts like a charm, but i have no idea why i have to push up on the wheel for it to get started?

 

I have the logs from my truck in the same fashion, it's a nice thing to have that's for sure.
As for the ignition, either the cylinder is reallly wore out, the actuator is paritally broke or maybe just bent a little. That is if it's a tilt wheel?

 

Look for a badly-installed or damaged trailer connector, but it's common for the turn/hazard switch to fail, and for the taillight grounds to corrode.

Buy a few cans of Gunk Engine Brite (not foamy) and follow the instructions. Once the engine is clean, you'll be able to find the oil & coolant leaks more easily.
