Question 1993 F150 302 V8 - Ignition Module - Gray or Black?

My F150 has the gray ignition module but I have a black one spare. I plugged the black one in and it seems to run perfect.

I read online that installing a gray where a black is stock can cause codes and problems.

I have not found anything saying that installing a black inplace of a gray causes problems.

Does anyone know if using a black ignition module in place of a stock gray one will cause problems? If so, what problems?

Thanks,

Roger

Neither will cause any specific problem, and EECs built for gray ICMs just don't care which one is hooked up because they don't look for any info from the ICM; it's a one-way datastream on the SPOUT circuit. EECs built for black are waiting to get IDM info, so they set a code if they don't get it. But that lack of info doesn't stop them from sending out the normal SPOUT data, and the engine will just run SLIGHTLY worse than it should, but not nearly badly enough to notice; probably not even enough to measure.

Study this diagram & its caption:

Thanks for the reply!

From what I was reading the Gray ICM has an input from the starter circuit so that when its engaged it ignores SPOUT signals. Also, the GRay one controls ignition dwell.

Now, having said that I have no idea what ignition dwell is lol...

THanks,

Roger

Solution

Yah, I was on my phone and couldnt read the small stuff real well...

Anyways, I drove the truck today after adhering the BLACK ICM to the heatskink and omg its HORRIBLE. IT tops out att 65mph where it misses so badly that it shakes. At any high rpm it misses. Driving slow and low rpms is fine. Which makes sense since the Gray module is supposed to control the spark timing.

I hooked up the old gray module with no heat sink and then it ran fine again. Now I have my Gray module gluing to the heatsink.... I bought Arctic SIlver 5 permanaent heat transfer paste.

Bottom line.... dont swap ICM colors, either way!

Thanks for the input.

Roger

This truck runs fine with either color at any speed:

lol you can quit being such a @$$h0l3 at any time.

The 93 5.0 will NOT run correct with the black module if you had a gray one to start.

I don't know what you mean; it looks to me like you're the one being an ***.

I haven't tried. I guess you didn't pay attention, but that truck I posted above has an '88 F150 5.0L engine with a '90 CV intake, a reman '88 EEC, a reman '92 distributor, and modified wiring to use a remote TFI. The first one I installed was an aftermarket CCD module (gray, but the Ford color would be black) because I didn't have a true gray push-start, and the truck ran perfectly - no CEL. Eventually, I found a JY gray module, and put that in. It runs the same. If I had another push-start module, I'd throw it in one of my '95 4.9Ls just to see what happens.

So you have no idea what dwell even means, but you openly show dis-respect to someone who is not only trying to help you, but most likely has forgotten more than you know?
I never read all the rules when I joined to get help, but I think it's fair to say,
"check your ego at the home page" if you sign in and need help from others. No one's getting paid to give advice here. I hope you bare that in mind when you request someone else's valuble time and experience. Best of luck with your issue.
