Might check the distributor this weekend. Thanks for the idea. At this point I'm willing to try anything. I changed out the trans filter today and it was over serviced by at least two qts. Probably drained out 1-1/2 gl. When I filled it back up it only needed 3-1/2 qts to bring it up to the correct level. I was hoping that might be the problem but there's no change. Oh well! Nothing like shooting in the dark!

You refilled the trans with the engine hot & idling in park, right? Did you shift it through all the ranges to purge the air? Did you read the dipstick?

Sure did. Took about 3-1/2 qts to bring the level in range. When I checked it before replacing the filter it was at least an inch above the top of the normal range on the stick and it was foamy. Hopefully all that extra fluid didn't trash the tranny.
