AC issue

I have a 1995 F-150 and my AC has not blown cold for a while now. i am hoping that the system just needs to be recharged. When I turn the AC on the compressor does come on, runs for only a few seconds then turns off. A few seconds later it will turn back on. Is the compressor bad or is it just a low refrigerant charge? I am considering buying a recharge system but I do not know if the system is R12 or R134a. Is there a way to find out?

Any other help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
Charles

It's low on refrigerant. You really should take it to a pro and get it leak tested before recharging.
