Welcome to the site!!! As for your fuel gauge/ pump issue I don't think it would be just a loose wire. If you search the subject I'm pretty sure you'll find an answer. My guess is that both pumps would need replaced. A friend had a 95 he drove a couple of years without working gauges. Finally the pumps went bad (not simultaneously) and he replaced them both and he had gauges again. But don't quote me on this. As far as going aftermarket on your truck. What do you have in mind?

Welcome to the site!

Sorry to say but it is most likely your fuel pump. Not sure about the gauges though.

Also, Ill be the first to say it, many of the questions you will have most likely have already been asked or talked about. The search button at the top will help you a lot. Always check there before you post.

Good luck with your future plans, and again, welcome to the site!

Welcome to the site! my 89 long bed had the EXACT same problems with fuel\gauges. It ended up being a bad pump(rear) and sending unit (front). You can check the wiring and all that to make sure that it is in good shape, but it'll most likely be the pump\sending unit. I'd start by unpluging the wiring harness from the pump itself (reach around the top of the gas tank, unplug it), and simply check for 12v going to the pump (multimeter). If you don't get the 12v, then it may not be the pump. If that happens start at the in-dash switch, checking for the same 12v.
Worst case scenario is that you either have to drop both tanks or take the bed off. I optd for taking the bed off, and it was actually VERY easy, 6 bolts holding the bed down (might be less for you since it's a short bed), 3 little screws per filler neck, along with a hose clamp on each filler neck holding them to the bed (they don't actually clamp a hose), and a single plug for for the tail-lights (just on the driver side of the license plate, behind the bumper). Don't have to take off the tailights, and with a friend, we carried my long bed off into my garage. I had a toolbox on it too, so with a shortbed, it should be somewhat easy, way easier than dropping the tanks if you ask me(expecially when there is gas in them). Less bolts to break, etc. Just remember, no matter how you choose to do it, replace the o-rings on the lock-rings. The new fuel pumps normally come with new o-rings, but I don't know about the new sending units. Here's some pics of when I did it:

Pullin' the bed is the way to do it for sure. Fixin' a dodge right now who the owner dropped the tank from underneath, and I think I'll have to pull the bed to even try to finish the job.

This shows where to find the paint codes:

There are many websites that will decode them, like PaintScratch...

This caption tells how to diagnose the fuel gauge:
