'95 AODE shift problem..ive searched all night..help please

Old member here, got another f series truck, this time is a 1995 F-150 XLT,
4x4, with approx, 127,000 miles. Engine is the 5.0 V8. after some minor upgrades, ie; 4 shocks up front, new brake shoes in the rear, and an oil change, the truck is actually on the road...however it does not shift into 3rd or above...im thinkin shift solenoid...any thoughts on it...it does drive..shifting with power till about 40 mph, then it drops out..ummm..i have to manually either put the tranny in neutral, wait a sec. then shift it back into drive, Or, i slow down to a coast..under 35mph, then the tranny re-engages and i can drive on some more...up till 40-45 mph...Any thoughts ya'll....i got this truck for a "song", i have less then 400 bucks in it...through trades...so i really have no money in it...ive done google searches all of last night, and searched the site here for problem solutions to no avail...Please help. Or crap, i dont know what tranny i may have now, just seen a craigslist add here local for an E4OD tranny for a '94 model f 150 for 250 bucks...how do i tell what tranny i have, ive been told to count the bolts on the pan and the would tell me..or would it be in the VIN number...Please help, i dont have 1200-2500bucks for a tranny re-build...transmissions are not my strong point on the f series trucks, i can tell you just about anything else..

The AODE wasn't offered in F-series. Read this caption & the links in it:

Have you checked the fluid level? Read the dipstick, this diagram, and the section of its caption about changing the ATF:
