Question 1987 f150 tensioner pulley

I need to replace the tesioner pulley, and have never done so before. I replaced te alternator due to whining, but now think its the tensioner.
Any advice would be appreciated.
I lucked into this truck, but it has not been driven for 20 months.I have changed the oil, gas and battery so far. It starts right up.
Thanks,
Tim

Put your truck's details in your signature, especially engine size (4.9L, 5.0L, or 5.8L). Also, trans, mileage, mods, maintenance, & repairs are helpful to know.

Then don't replace anything until you KNOW what's wrong. Loosen or remove the fan (the pulley may tilt), then take the belt off, and spin each pulley by hand. The PS pump won't spin freely, but you should be able to detect abnormal noise. The smog pump also won't spin freely, but again: faults should be apparent. Only the outermost grooved portion of the A/C compressor pulley spins, and it should be smooth, silent, and free.
