Please Help! Fuel Problems I Think

I have a 1995 F-150 with dual fuel tanks. I filled up both tanks last week. I ran the front tank down to 1/8th of a tank and switched to the rear tank. I drove my truck about 30 miles (103 degrees outside) and it started acting like it wasn't getting fuel, would not idle. I switched to the front tank and it ran fine. I drove home and let it sit til it cooled down (about 4 hours) and went to start it on the rear tank and it seemed to run great. So I replaced the fuel filter and ran it again for about 20 miles and it did the same thing, I switched to the front tank to get it home, once again let it cool down and went to start on the rear tank and it ran great. WHAT is causing this? Thanks for any help.

Sounds like a dirty strainer sock on the pump inlet caused by a buildup of crud in the rear tank. The pump runs for a while and the crud plugs up the strainer sock and starves the pump. You switch it off and the crud settles out on the bottom of the tank. You turn the pump back on and it runs till it clogs again.

Keep doing what you're doing till you run the rear tank dry then drop it and flush it and clean the sock or possibly replace the entire fuel delivery module since they have a finite life and you don't want to drop the tank again any time soon.

Do I need to change the fuel pump out? If so, do I need to change the fuel pump out in the front tank as well? I read somewhere if you change one out you should change the other one also. Thanks

The pump is not available as a separate item. If you want to replace it you have to replace the entire Fuel Delivery Module as I stated above. You do not have to replace it but it might be a good idea if staving it for fuel has damaged it (They need to be submerged and flowing to stay cool.) It's a pain to get to and you don't want to do it a second time. Whether you choose to replace it or not is up to you. Do not replace the front module. There is absolutely no reason to do so.
