Rear tank leaks into Front tank

the sending unit broke on my front tank so ive been using my back tank and its leaking gas into the front tank. i know this because i ran the front tank bone dry and now when i switch it to the front it still runs so i know it has gas in it. plus the needle goes down way faster than it should and i know i get better gas mileage than its saying.

my question is what is the part called thats stuck. i know its some sort of valve that closes off the front tank and i know its a common problem on these old pickups but i dont know what its called or where its located exactly. any help? thanks

The problem is the shuttle valve in the Fuel Delivery Module in the front tank. The valve is not available as a service part, you need to replace the entire FDM.

Or you can run on the rear tank till it empties, switch to the front and re-fill the rear, run the front till empty, switch to the rear, etc.

so its in the front tank? so basically either way i have to drop the front tank. i was thinking either i fix the leak from the rear tank to the front tank or fix the sending unit in the front tank so i know how much gas i have... hmm...

There is no "leak" in the rear tank. The shuttle valve is a pilot operated valve in the return to tank line that is held open when the pump is running and is supposed to be closed when the pump is not running. The one in the front tank is not closing properly when the front pump is not running. This allows unused fuel from the rear tank to be returned to both tanks simultaneously

oh haha ok well i just need to know how to fix the problem because its very aggravating. i know how to fix the sending unit but if its easier to fix the valve or replace the whole module i'd like to do that. im just trying not to have to drop the tank

Three choices:
1) Drop the tank
2) Pull the bed
3) Live with it

i had a 95 that did that, then i had fuel gushing out of the front tank. this was about 4 years ago, and i found out that ford had a recall for that part, i took it in they fixed it, and it did not cost me a penny

Mine's done this one time. I was running on the back tank and thought I was getting really good MPG. When I filled up the math came out to 22mpg. I was pretty excited until I switched to the front tank and there was no gas in it. That was the only time it did it though and hasn't done it since.

The recall never expires, so check the Ford website to see if it applies to your VIN.

Read the whole FSA:
