It's not unusual to find the 8.8 or the 9" under 85 and 86 broncos. I've seen them both. Most came with 3.55s for axle ratios, but I believe you'll find some with 3.08s. The front axle is a Dana 44. You will have to get a new differential for 4.10s or lower gears in the Dana 44. The differential case is different between 3.73 and higher and 4.10 and lower. Been there, done that twice.

So if I replace the gears in the rear end, I have to make the same change up front? The 4WD isn't the problem, it's just the general driving around in the mountains with high gearing.

I've talked it over with the G/F, as well as a friend who is very knowledgeable on the subject, and I think we'll be going with 4.56 gears in the rear for now, and remove the front driveshaft until we buy gears for the front. I appreciate the replies helping get this all sorted out!
