95 4x4 axle u joint removal ?

I need to replace the axle u joint at the wheel . I have just gotten the flange separated from the spindle and would like to pull the shaft out to change the joint . I also need to replace the lower ball joint so now is the time since I am this far . What do I do to get the shaft to come out of the front differential ?

Also before I do the other side is there a better way to separate the flange ( 5 bolt that the axle slides though to the hub ) than a chisel and heat ? Beat on this damn thing 30 minutes before I could get it separated ?

Thank you

Should be an "S" clip or "C" clip inside the diff. if it's like the back.

If you are talking about this article: http://fullsizebronco.com/forum/show...ht=d50+install

This is where the slide hammer comes in. I bought one just for this job from HF for like 30 bucks. That or beat the sh*t out of it with a mallet (NOTE: NOT a sledge or something that will damage the spindle). It will eventualy come off. Then you are home free. Soak it in PB Blaster over night if you have to. It may help.

I apparently was not smart enough to pull on the axle hard enough to get it out . It is out and the u joint is so bad that the caps are popping off instead of coming loose . This one will take a little time .

The other problem is trying to press the lower ball joint out . it appears that after taking the snap ring off the must be pressed up from the bottom . Is the washer looking piece ( under the nut on top of the joint) part of the frame or is mine just seized up and needs a good hammer and some heat ?

I have a c clamp ball joint press that is supposed to have adapters and everything needed for 4x4 ball joints but it came with no directions or pictures for guys like me , so I have no idea how to use it correctly . China made deal

thanks again for the help
