87 f150 fuel system
87 f150 fuel system
I just got an 87 f150 and the fuel system is driving me crazy.
When I got it I filled both tanks up. Drove on the front (worked fine) got low and switched to rear. The gauge pegged on the full side and a few minutes later the truck died. Switched to the front tank and started up. Replaced the rear sending unit/fuel pump. Drove on rear tank, got low switched to front tank (gauge showed full) after a few minutes the truck died. Switched to rear tank, and starts up just fine.
Pulled the front lines off of the (I have no clue what the part is, looks like a large black valve that has both front and rear lines coming in and 2 lines coming out) turned the switch on and fuel comes out. Left the front lines off the (above mentioned part) and switched to rear tank, turned key on and fuel comes out of the input side where the front line goes. This leads me to believe that his part might be bad and not swapping between tanks (assuming that is what it is meant to do). Re connected the lines to mystery part and pulled line at entry side of fuel filter, switched tank selector to front tank, turned key on. After 5 or 6 on/off cycles some fuel comes out. Switch to rear tank and similar amounts of fuel come out. Hook everything back up, crank truck with front tank selected, runs for a few minutes then dies. Wont restart on front tank even if key is turned on/off mulitple times. Switch to rear, on/off a few times and I hear a different noise from either the mystery part or inline fuel pump. Then the truck will start and run fine on rear and no more different noise.
ANybody got any sugestions and what is the mystery part?
Thanks
Sky
