Oil Pan
Oil Pan
I thought the plug on my oil pan was leaking but then found out there was a rusted out hole in the bottom of the pan. A friend put some bondo on it thinking it would work but the bondo isn't sticking to it and the leak seems to be getting worse. Can I put JBWeld on it or do I have to replace the oil pan and if I do have to replace it is it difficult and/or expensive?
It's a 1995 F150 XLT

It's a real PITA on a V8 4x4.I don't know if that applies to your truck or not?The pan gasket on my 351 Bronco has a real slight drip but it's not even noticable on the dipstick so I'm waiting until I have a reason to pull the engine because it would probably be easier.
Anyway below is a writeup of what is involved to remove the pan on a V8 4x4.

JB Weld will work, but you need to get the pan sparkling clean around that leak first - or it won't stick (like the bondo). I doubt you can get it clean enough with oil still in the pan so you'd probably have to empty it, then get all paint, oil and/or rust off of it, down to bare metal, etc. And ideally, spread it on the inside of the pan once it's off and clean.
JB would be a temporary fix, so you might consider getting another pan from a junkyard in the first place. Oil pan isn't a horribly difficult thing to replace - you'll probably have to unbolt the motor mounts and jack the engine up a little. Whatever you can afford, doing it right the first time will save many headaches down the road.

I had JB Water Weld on mine for 2 years and it dripped a LITTLE bit. I drained the oil and let it sit over night. Then I sanded it down and roughed it up a little bit for the JB Weld to stick to. After it was on I waited about 12 hours before putting oil back in it so that it was cured.
Then one day it let go while I was goin 65mph down the highway and I didn't know it. Didn't hurt anything, not sure how long I drove like that but I know I drove 100 miles straight before I got out and saw oil pouring out of it.
Yes, it is a MAJOR PITA to change the oil pan. When I put a new one on I was in school so between work and school it took me a week to get the new one on.
