4x4 problems?

ive noticed a few differences in my 4 wheel drive lately. first of all, when i press the 4x4 button there is a huge clunk under the truck and then the 4x4 kicks in. second, the low range isnt working. not sure when that happend, but i just noticed it today- any idea what couldve caused that? and the final thing, when ive been driving in, and taken the truck out of 4x4, the whole truck vibrates while driving in 2wd on regular smooth, paved roads. its frusterating, and i was hoping some one had some idea about this. the truck is a 94, if that makes any difference.

thanks

Sounds like a bad TC to me.
Is your drive line still stock?

The vibration could be coming from poorly balanced tires, or you could have a u-joint that is getting ready to fail. On a 16 year old vehicle, I'd have the u-joints inspected and replaced if needed. I've dropped a driveshaft before on the road and it can do some damage.

ah, thats interesting about the u joints. at my last full service oil change they told me the front passanger side u joint was "wasted". but hey keep in mind it only vibrates after its been in 4x4...does that still make sense?

Interesting, Ford had push button 4x4 in 1994??? dang. can anyone confirm this? Chevy only had it in 96+

I like pullin my stick on the floor anyways. Little more security knowing its in.

But i gotta give to ford a little a head of the times there.

Oh and btw 94f150girl sounds like it is the u joints.

Yeah, confirming the push-button 4-wheel drive (manual hubs, in my case) right on the dash. Mine's a '93, even.

Just curious, are you backing up to unlock your hubs after taking out 4wd. The bad u joint will vibrate at road speeds out of 4wd. The shifting problem could be your shifter motor sticking up or you may not be slowing down enough before engagement. Try stopping completely then shifting to 4 low. And how the heck does a chevyman know fords. I've seen shift on the fly as early as 91, and all had automatic hubs unless someone changed them out for the stronger manual locker.

To unlock the auto hubs you need to stop and go the opposite direction for about 10 feet to unlock your hubs. This is even written in the manual for my 93 F250.

He's been around for a couple months now. He just seems to enjoy stirring things up and making unnecessary comments.

And hey what do you know I revive this thread and make a comment about manual hubs and end up helping the girl out somehow.
