Talking new pre-97 owner

hey y'all. im new to the pre-97 trucks but not to fords. i picked up an 86 bronco yesterday. its got a carb'd 302 with auto tranny from a 78 f100. it also came with a 351 and auto tranny from a 70 e van i think. anyways, im gonna sell of the 351 if i can get the 302 running. the owner said all the 302 needs is a new flywheel. its got one on there but its the wrong size.

overall it really just needs some TLC. does anyone have any advice or tips or a book or guide as to what steps i should take in restoring it? i dont want it back to showroom condition, just want it to run good and be reliable. its gonna be my mud truck.

thanks for helping.

welcome to the site. Looks like that bronco has tons of potential. Check out www.broncograveyard.com and order a catalog. They have lots of good stuff for broncos and f 150s. Just curious why don't you want to use the 351?

i know. but right now im gonna focus on getting it running. then ill put some 33's on it then a lift and some 35's or so. the 36's that are on there now are bald and dry rotted. you can see the front passenger tire is already flat. and it was full yesterday evening.

im already a member of LMC truck. they've got some good stuff. and it came with a haynes manual. i know the chilton's is better but with the different motors im not sure if its worth the $$$. ive got to save up for other stuff like getting it running. plus my girlfriend's brother is an excelent ford mechanic and he said he would help me as long as i do all the work. that way i can learn what to do.

the 302 is already in there. i had decided that i wanted to keep the 302 because it was already in there. save me some trouble. but now that i think about it, i already have to pull the motor to put in the flywheel so i might just put the 302 in there. i guess it all depends on how much i can sell the 302 for and if i can see there's something wrong with the 351.

thanks for all the support. i think i did pretty good getting this bronco. i paid $650 for it and the extra 351 and 2 extra sets of steel wheels(8 extra wheels total). then $100 to have it towed home. $750 total. im estimating 200-250 for the 351 and 50-100 for each set of rims. means i paid $300 -$450 for the bronco after i sell everything. maybe im a little optimistic but hey, maybe ill get full asking price for everything.

im about to start looking for an online version of the owner's manual, if anyone has a link, please post it.

also, i know this forum is great for 97+ models, not too sure about the older models. if anyone knows of another forum to check out, please post a link. no offense to those loyal pre-97 posters, just want to get the best info.

thanks for all the help.
