Removing exhaust pipe from exahust manifold

If it ain't one thing it's another!

My exhaust manifold heat riser bit the dust, and I need to replace it. I've got the new part in, now I started looking at what I need to do. I can see one bolt on the exhaust manifold that holds the riser & pipe in place, but can't see the other one (from the top of the engine). The one that I do see appears to be solidly fused to the manifold by rust.

I'll try to get a picture of it tonight. I can also tell that the bolt is extremely rusted, to the point there are almost no threads between the pipe & manifold.

Do I stand a chance in you know where to get these thing separated with out having to buy a new manifold? I'm affraid that if I had to take the manifold off, the bolts would break and I would be stuck with not manifold on the truck and no way to get the broken bolts out.

I've been soaking/saturating the area with WD-40 for a couple of days, but I don't know if it will do any good.

The truck is an '87 F150, 351w,5.8l

Thanks for any and all pointers!

i had a hell of a time removing the exhaust from the manifold when i pulled my 5.8. ended up sawing the old exhaust off because i was swapping headers on anyways. even when i had the motor on the stand the bolts wouldnt budge even after spraying with PB blaster

WD-40 wont do the job. You need a penetrant like PB blaster or Zep. If they are rusted that bad though odds are they will break. You have a couple options if they break...

Drill the hole out and either tap it for a stud or shove a bolt through the other side if possible. Probably the best option. You can either leave the manifold on or take it off to do this.

Get some headers! You can get some on ebay for under $200 and most of them have bolts that go through the flanges to prevent this problem from happening again.
