new clutch problem
I have a 87 F150 4.9L with NP435 trans. The clutch started slipping here a while back and I started a replacement on it. The truck had a 11" clutch, but I decided to step down to a 10" because I don't pull anything at all with it and due to being short on money. We have also replaced the master and slave cylinders.
Here's the problem. The truck won't go into gear. Grinds on attempting 1st or Rev, but doesn't for 2-4. But won't go into gear. Initially we hadn't replaced the master or slave and it would grind on all gears. We replaced them and now it only grinds in the one's mentioned above. The only thing we have left to think is that we somehow got the clutch plate on backwards, but we don't think that we did.
Any suggestions, recommendations or ideas???

Hey Steve, thanks for the diagrams. Should have gotten back sooner, but it has been busy with problems with other vehicles. Turns out that the new clutch that I bought had a defective pressure plate. Didn't need the master or slave cylinders that I bought. Just took for stinking ever to figure out. Oh well.

Any time you do a clutch on one of these trucks with the *&^$#@!@$ annular slave cylinder, it's a good idea to replace the slave whether it needs it or not. Sooner or later it will fail and the last thing you need is to have to drop the tranny yet again.
