Starter Troubles

1995 F-150, 4wd. 4.9, 5-speed overdrive. My dad had the truck, thought the starter went so replaced it. It didn't work so thought the starter was no good, got a replacement put it on still wouldn't work. I have the truck now and I have replaced the flywheel ring, and got a 3rd starter and it still won't work. It turns the engine over but is really noisy, grinding sound,. I don't want to keep trying though and screw something up again. Any ideas?

My dad got his from Carquest and I got mine from Napa. I told them it was for a manual transmission. I wonder if that is the problem. I will have to check that out.

the part listed on the recipt is #2449254. I don't have the box because he kept it to take back the old one.

its the right part number. what was wrong with the original starter? the engine still cranks, i assuming it'll still start? if so then does the noise continue while running?

My dad said that he went out to start it and it didn't do anything. For some reason he thought it was the starter and replaced it and that is when all this trouble started.
When I put this new one on it did start the truck but it it is really noisey. That is what the problem was for my dad too. I haven't tried to start it since though because I don't want to mes up the flywheel again. My dad also tried shims but that didn't work either.
It is still noisey but I didn't leave it run long.

it just wont turn the alternator, a/c comp., water pump, etc. its just to make sure the noise isnt coming from one of them. you may also want to check the oil level if you havent.
