Check Engine Light
Check Engine Light
Hey guys...I've got a stupid question...
I've got a Check Engine light on my 1994 F150 (302ci). I know how to pull codes for OBII vehicles...but how do I get the code for older Pre-97 models?
I suspect I need an 02 sensor (getting about 12-13 mpg hwy)...but I want to be sure before blindly spending the $$.
Thanks for the help.

Paperclip it. Actually there is a very good write up in the haynes/chilton manuals on doing this on the OBDI vehicles, pick up one of those books, you'll need it later down the road most likely anyway!
I personally cannot explain the paperclip method properly but i'm sure someone here knows it

using the pic above use a jumper wire(or paper clip) and just simply jump the self test input connector to the signal return pin.
the engine light will flash the codes with the key on- there will be a slight pause between digits. a slightly longer pause will start another code. if you need to see the light flash again just turn the key off then on again.

It's very easy to do. I went ahead and taped a copy of it to the inside of the book i keep in the truck.

That's right from http://fordfuelinjection.com/. I just drew in where the paperclip goes to make it easier.

well at least he should get it right then
yea just use the fordfuelinjection version- probably explains it better than i can
The VERY EASY way is to just ground the little gray pigtail with a jumper, turn on the key, and count the check engine light flashes.

Well I gave this a shot...but now I'm more confused than ever. I've tried counting using the instructions on the Ford Fuel injection site...but the pattern is confusing.
I THINK I have codes: 111 and 332. But if I have 111 (system pass) then can I have 332 also? It either passes or it doesn't, right?
If I do have the 332 (EGR valve opening not detected), I'm guessing a new EGR valve is in order?
I think I'm just gonna try autozone and see if they'll pull the code for me.

An alternative to the paperclip is the cheap $20 code readers from the parts store.
Sounds like your issues isnt with getting the light to flash, but it is counting the flashes. Try it again to verify.

Autozone can't pull OBD1 codes. All the cheapo $20 readers do is make the light flash and you still have to count flashes. Paperclip is cheaper.
I've never read out Ford codes, but I read out GM codes all the time - with a GM, "12" is pass - BUT it flashes you a 12, then flashes you all other codes, then another 12 when done. Maybe that's what Ford does - 111, then all the codes, then 111 again?
