1985 F-150 Fuel pump/tank ????'s 5.0 EFI

Ok, the truck was running today and then the pump took a DUMP!!! Must have been the 3 y/o fuel in the tank!!!! So I drop the tank, pull the pump/hanger out and it is NASTY, varnished up with all kinds of crud ALL over it. Take it out and try to hook it up to a battery, and no pumpage.

3 questions here:

1. How do I tell if I have a 17 gallon tank or the 19 gallon tank? It only has one and it's fairly long.

2. Any ideas on how much it would cost to have the tank cleaned out and will that be a good fix or am I looking at buying a new tank AND pump? Bear in mind I only have less than $600 in this running/driving (well it was until this)

3. The fuel "filter" that's on the frame rail, that unscrews was also FUBAR'D and when I went to put the new filter in with the new O-ring, I could never get it to seal up and the new O-ring ended up splitting (it looked pretty puny) Any ideas where I can get a new one?

The pump/s I looked up were about $100 as was the tank

****edit**** I found out the tank I have is the long narrow 19 gallon tank, looks like cheapest (long run) is to get a new tank/pump assembly and Primary filter....dang, I'm going to have as much in that as I paid for the truck!!!

2. Any junkyard should have a few good used tanks.
3. That's the "single-function reservoir", and the revised design uses an external filter. Click my black Bronco in my signature & read the captions in the '84-89 Fuel Reservoirs album. To get another O-ring, buy another filter. But this time, apply a LITTLE adhesive (like Copper-Coat spray, or Indian Head varnish) to the groove in the cup to hold the O-ring in place. After it dries, set the O-ring exactly on it (never stretch or distort the O-ring) and then apply a thin film of clean engine oil to the top of the O-ring, and to the mating surface on the reservoir so the O-ring doesn't adhere to it & distort as you tighten it.
4. For what? Inside the tank, or on the frame rail? For the frame pump, just get the right one from any decent parts store (stay OUT of the zone). For the tank, you can replace it with an external pump, as long as you mount the pump VERY low on the frame so it doesn't have to lift the fuel.

thanks for the link Steve, ya I was wondering if the mustang style 190lph inline would work for the highpressure pump that's on the frame rail (haven't checked it to see if it's fubar'd as well, the one in the tank was SHOT OUT, not to mention it didn't have a section of hose to connect the pump outlet to the "pickup tube".....YIKES)

I may just get a new tank as it's only about $100 for a new one and then a new intank pump/filter assembly (also about $100)

I need to check the pump that's on the frame rail for functionality....

Thanks again.

Brad
