Newb needing Trans Insight
Newb needing Trans Insight
Hello all. I was actually going to post this in both this area and the Transmission section for best results. I have a 1991 F150 5.0/E4od SC/LB truck that I was hoping to get some insight on. I believe that the E4od has moved under its own power for the last time here recently. I actually have a few questions I was hoping to get answered. First, this truck will be used for towing, 4x4ing, and very rarely driving to/from work (mostly just to wrench on the truck). I have searched not only here but the vast world of Google and have somewhat found the answer im looking for.
I am thinking of ditching the e4od for a C6. NOW PLEASE dont blast this thread with "the E4od is made of kyrptonite and cant be beat and your dumb for thinking it" comments. I have access to very well built C6s and I almost prefer them being that I know they can be beat on and take it. So now to my questions. I know that the c6 will bolt up and work to both the motor and transfer case. I know I will need longer driveshaft from a c6/4x4 equipped single cab/long bed (i think 133" WB) truck. Short of the driveshaft, modifing the 4X4 linkage and switch (tricking) the E4ods computer to "N" position for it to not bother anything, what else do I have to do? Do I have to change/modify anything else? I know most likely the rear trans mount but thats not hard either. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks for reading.

I think you may need a PCM from a manual trannied truck. Your auto-tranny PCM is not going to be happy trying to run with a N reading from where the TRS used to be and may drop into limp mode
No, the EEC will set silent codes for the missing trans, but that's it. Everything will work fine.
The trans doesn't have its own controller, so when you wire up the C6's NSS/MLPS, everything will behave just like the E4OD was still there. No need to "trick" anything.
This shows the crossmembers:

Yes, the E4OD is superior to the C6 in every way. It's actually an improved version of the C6. The early models (before ~'95) had a lot of problems, but if you get it rebuilt once, you'll never have another one from it. It was renamed the 4R100, and has been used successfully for MANY years behind the PSTD, so it can take a LOT more abuse than a C6. Read this caption starting ~1/2-way down:

Ok thanks so far for the help. SO if '95 is the stongest year for these trucks trans, would there be any issues with me picking up a 1995-up e4od/4r100 and putting it in? Any controller issues or is it a direct bolt in? Thanks again
I may have to. Wondering where in Central ohio is a good place to get it rebuilt?
FYI here's some info including a list of the changes in the E4OD over the years

Can't help with the rebuilder unless you're willing to drag it north to Akron.

Well I think I may rebuild. My only issue is I think that the truck may have hard parts damage more than just simple rebuild items. Hopefully this sounds familiar to someone when I describe the problem its having. When I put the truck into reverse the trans will engage and start to move the truck without issues. As soon as I drop it into Drive the truck feels like the brakes are seized/locked up and I have to give the truck 3/4 throttle for it to even move. BUT when put down into first it will drive somewhat normal. Does this sound anything like what anyone else has had happen? Also do you think I can just do a rebuild and be okay? Any help is much appreciated. Thanks
No, that's not what I said. I said MOST of the upgrades were applied by the factory in '95. The trans was modified each year to improve durability &/or strength.Yes. Just let the rebuilder tell YOU if it needs any hard parts. Don't tell him you think it does,or you run the risk of him gouging you just because he knows you expect the price to go up. If he finds something major, he'll call you.
Call around to a few used car lots & dealerships, and see if there's a place that several of them use.
