What are people doing for cold air induction/custom air intake setups?

I don't have a picture, but on my 90 F-150 w/351w, the engine is expected to suck in air through a horrible rectangular opening at the front of the hood that is about the size of a stack of post-it notes.

Without spending a couple hundred bucks on a K&N setup, what are some of you guys doing with either factory parts or building your own intake setups?

stock works just fine. just insulate it. and get a free flowing filter. my K&N didnt give me any better results than the stock intake, except it made the exhaust sound better.

Yes. Leave the factory CAI in place & wrap it with foil-faced self-adhesive foam plumbing insulation. Drop in a K&N (none of that open-element crap) or some other reusable filter, and FOLLOW THE RECOMMENDED MAINTENANCE SCHEDULE.

The only mod you MIGHT do is swapping to a 4.9L/7.5L fresh-air duct (core support to air filter box), but there's really no point.

To keep it from picking up underhood heat

after reading this thread I did this a couple of days ago, I did the foil insulation on the larger hoses didnt have enough to do the airbox, but also dropped in an afe filter which is similar to K&N for 75$ all said and done I did notice a difference in throttle responsiveness and also I noticed when I have it on cruise at 100 km/hr but rpms drooped from about 1900 to around 1600, now I can cruise at 110 km/hr and get same milage as before at 100 km/hr

small difference but definitly works my truck is bone stock other then this I think allowing the exhaust to breath a bit better will improve this further.

pleased with this small mod

any other cheap mods like this??
Dan.

Sure - the cheapest: thorough regular maintenance.

you can install the air intake from an F-250 which moves the intake to the side of the radiator and opens the intake hole to 2 paks of smokes size. I posted this several years ago, even gave the part number. And yes, Steve is right...read the mpg thread. Saved me lots of money and the stuff works.
