1979 f150 steering and springs question?

I just picked up a 1979 f150 4x4 with a 351M and a 4spd. The power steering cuts in and out( easy quarter turn and hard quarter turn) Does this sound like the power steering pump or the power steering box? Also the trucks leaf springs are shot but it came with a set of leaf springs and the owner said they were from a ford just not sure what year. The springs on the truck and the springs I have are both 3" wide. How can I tell if they'll work before tearing into them? Thanks!!!!

Congrats on buyin' the last year of a real truck!

Does the pump change sounds when moving? How bout with the front end jacked up in the air?

Tape measure?

I can't hear any whining from the pump and its full of fluid, I'm kinda leaning towards the box, also i'm going to go mesure those springs today.

Ok I measured the springs on the truck and they are roughly 56inches and the ones i have for it are 53inches. Is this maybe because the weight of the truck is on the springs so they''re stretched out a bit?
