steering column problem

well i bought a 1989 f150 I6 2wd 5speed, bought it not running really cheap, problem was truck had no spark, the guy said he started it one day and it just shut of and that was it, he replaced the TFI moduel on the dizzy, and still nothing he replaced the coil and nothing. so when i got it i changed the distributor thinking pip sensor. and still nothing, the i noticed when i wiggled the rod ontop of the steering column and cranked it i got spark but now i cant get the fuel pump to come on. this rod on the column is bent all to hell and i think it needs to be replaced cause it wont move with the key only with pliers, should i replace the whole column? its non tilt but has a steel case around it?

I wouldn't replace the whole steering column, just that actuator rod. Replacing the actuator rod can be a PITA but I'm sure it would be easier than replacing the steering column and who knows what shape the actuator rod would be in in the other steering column. The actuator rod shouldn't be much more than ten dollars at Ford garage and I would buy A haynes repair manual(about twenty dollars) it gives good step by step instructions on this job and many other procedures.

There is an adjustment on the piece the actuator slides into about 3/4 of the way down the column. Loosen the two bolts holding it in place and you can slide it up and down. I had the same issue after replacing my actuator rod and found that I had not tightened the bolts enough. Without the proper adjustment the actuator rod won't move far enough down the column when you turn the key to trigger the electronics.
