Fordman,

I am having a similar problem. I have a 94 5.0L though. and mine is 4x4. I'm pretty sure the tranny is on its way out.

I can get up to speed just fine, she'll cruise at 75 all day long (right now anyway) but when i go to slow down to about 20-30mph and then slowly start to accelerate again, she slips and clunks until i get back up to speed. Sorry to hijack your thread, but you posted almost exactly what i wanted to post!

As long as it is before 96, no problem. After 96, the calibrations and also the designation changed. It is now a 4R100, not an E4OD. They are also specific to a two or four wheel drive.

IIRC there were some variations in the pin-outs over the years so all years may fit but the controls may not work without harness surgery. If the pinouts on a 95-96 are the same as yours, you want to use one, there were significant internal upgrades with the 95s.

The 4R70W is an entirely different tranny and is actually weaker than the E4OD. For that reason it was never used behind a 300 or a 351. There were a series of internal changes made to the E4OD over the years with the most significant being completed for the 1995 model year. However, it may not interface with the wiring harness of an older truck. He will need to look at the connector pinouts to determine that.

BTW if you do rebuild your tranny, br sure to get the 1995 upgrades.

Ya your right.. Im thinking of the AOD.. NOT the E40D...Alot of guys use the gear sets out of the 4R70W & put them in the AOD makes them much better.. Ive been around stangs to long i guess >> Lew
