91 I6 injectors

I am replacing the head on my 91 I6 4.9L, and decided to replace the fuel injectors while the upper intake was off.
I bought a set from NAPA for $200 (not including core) but they look different than the originals. They do fit and installed into the fuel rail fine and looks like the O rings will line up for placement in the manifol.

When I took the old ones back today for my core charge, I asked about.
after a little checking the 92 injectors looked closer to mine than the 91s.

when I bought the gasket kit they asked for the build date pre Feb 91 or later.

The 92 injectors are $20.00ea more than the 91s, so I am going to try the 91 injectors but am hoping to get reassurement from here or a definate don't do it wont run right.

Any body know

The orignals and 92 replacements have a top hat on the manifold end.
The 91s do not and appear to have a larger discharge orifice.

Make sure they are the same color as the ones that came out or you will have problems.
They should be light grey 14# injectors.

I'll double check the color when I get home and maybee post a pic of what they gave me.
The new ones do not have a top hat on them nor would the top hats off of my old ones fit. Do they all need top hats?

I am not sure what you mean by "TOP HAT", can you circle it in one of the photos above?
The injector and the its "O" ring must seal in the hole of the fuel manifold (rail).

There seams to be three different injectors for 4.9L engine.

They sell injectors for:
1987-1989
1990-1993
and 1993-1996

Here is a place that lists them with their photos:

NAPA is selling them as year specific with 91 being different from 92. the ones listed in the above website look the ones they sold me for my 91 but there are covers on ***** ends.

The top hat I'm talking about is the plastic cap on the manifold end of the injector

I dont know how to post a pic on here but it is th blue piece at the bottom of the photo you posted

I have called NAPA and asked them to hold my original injectors and right now I am planning on returning these and having my tested and cleaned at a local shop

The new injectors will seal and lineup properly in the fuel rail and mainfold, so fit is not a problem. now I think the new ones will protrude further into the manifold, because the injector is longer from the O ring seal to the orrifice for fuel delivery

You are calling the "Pintle Cap" a top hat.

A pintle cap has been used by some
manufacturers to try to reduce the deposits on
these style injectors.

For more information on injectors look at this link:

If you would like to clean the injectors yourself here is the information:
