This all depends on your wallet. First off, the engine mounts on the frame have to be changed. You will need all accessory drive mounts from the V8 you choose. Wiring harness for the truck. Counting the fuel pumps. V8 PCM (to include whatever trans you are using). Radiator and all hoses. Have you thought about that you have six cylinders that are 300 cubic inches? That engine has a 4 inch bore with a 3.98 inch stroke. That's why they have so much power. A 302 is eight cylinders with a total of 2 more cubic inches. 4 inch bore with 3 inch stroke. For the money, stick with what's in it. Best thing ever to happen to the 4.9 was fuel injection. On the other hand, if you came across a wrecked truck to get all the necessary parts from, it wouldn't be so bad. Just remember, there are all kinds of trials and tribulations that will come with this major of a swap in these times of computerized systems. If you feel up to it, then go for it.

If you go to a different engine, you have to make sure the transmission will hook up and in the same place. If you change tranmissions, then the driveshaft will be different.

There isn't a huge aftermarket for I6's, a lot of people in Australia use them though. Mostly emissions deletes and stuff are things you could do yourself without paying for aftermarket parts.

keep the 300 six best engine ford ever made. i had a 88 f150 ext cab long bed 4x4 with a 300. when i sold it the motor had 200,000 miles, it didn't leak or use a bit of oil. and i used my truck to hall my car to the track. when you yank the motor change the clutch, throw out bearing, and the servo while you have it out if it has not been done recently.

The Aussie I6 is based on the old 250 CID version of the Falcon 6 and has nothing in common with the 4.9. There are a few 4.9s Down Under but they've all been imported from North America and are referred to locally as the "Canadian" 6.

As for building up the 4.9, check out www.fordsix.com, specifically the Big Six Forum. There's a fair amount of aftermarket parts for the 4.9 but not all are emissions friendly or even computer compatible. There are also issues with the fuel system on the EFI versions. They respond very well to moderate head work.

I'm a member there, I was told head work alone wouldn't make a noticeable difference. And that FI was the way to go.

the 300 six is good for torque your not going to get a lot hp they have a very long stroke and don't rev very high.
