My truck was doing that about 6 months ago. I could "get by", by moving the stick to the left side of third, if that makes any sense. Well, anyway, I took it into the shop a couple od days later, and they told me it was the shifting forks, worked fine ever since then. Hope this helps!

I have a 96 F-150 302 that has recently started making a similar noise going into 3rd gear. I have been told (haven't verified yet) that it is the synchros (sp) not sure if that is the same as the shifting forks also going into 1st it grinds sometimes, but if I go to 2nd then to 1st it's okay. May have to try Fordby4's solution for 3rd. Good Luck, hope this helps some
