Post 300 upgrades

What can i do to my stock 1982 300 i-6 to get more hp. and torque out of it without spending a whole lot of money. What is the best bang for my buck? i am getting my exhaust redone with straight pipes. What esle should i do to help it out? How much would it cost to put the 390 4 bbl. carburator on. Thanks for any help.

Cool

Matt,
There are lots of things that can be done to the 300 I6, but the budget is the limiting factor. You can get an adaptor plate to mount the 4bbl on it for a reasonable price. i believe there may also be a 4bbl intake manifold you can buy. I had a friend with an 86 F150 with the 300 and he put a 4bbl with straight pipes and boy did it make a difference! You can do basically anything to that motor that you can do with a V8, but if you are going to do a whole lot, you are probably better just swapping in a V8. You can port the head yourself pretty cheap, and cams are available. Good luck!

my best friend has a 300 six he got from an 86 f-150 and he put it into his 78 F-250. these engines have great potential, hes done some internal work (bored over block, forged pistons to boost compression, shaved heads, and added cam with 4bbl holley carb) and hes making over 400 hp and has enough torque to do burnouts in his truck with 35" tires. as primetime said, the limiting factor is the price. if the engine has a lot of miles and has lost some compression, you could really benefit from a rebuild. good luck!
