Question 302 bolt on power

I want to get a little more power/torque/milage out of my 302 in my '93 Bronco. The engine does have 100k miles, but it is still in good shape and has good compression.

Since it is a '93, it's still the speed density (MAP and IAT) and I don't want to spend the cash to convert it to mass air. I'm planning to install a K&N FIPK, Borla single exhaust, shorty style headers, and a set of underdrive pulleys, and possibly a chip. I've read that this is about the max change to volumetric efficiency that the speed density system can handle.

I'm wondering if anyone has tried this setup. Did you get a good performance gain? Did you run into any problems? I'm also wondering what other power adders you would suggest. I think that heads, and a cam would be too much change for the speed density system.

Thanks,
Kevin

I think you will be dissappointed by what I have to say. If I a wrong I hope someone will correct me but this is what I have come to understand.

With a speed density system the computer pulls of the engine tuning information from a table and is not very flexible to changes (can't adapt) so no matter how much you improve the flow through the engine the computer doesn't recongize the changes and you get little or no improvement. With a mass air system, the computer measures the actual air coming in and makes tuning changes to adapt. If I were in your shoes I would bite the bullet and invest in a mass air setup. Just my .02

Check the Ford Motorsport site. I think they are around $1200.00.

You can find the MAF conversions for much less. They are in the $500 range. If you want more power from the rig, first get the MAF upgrade. no way around that. The intake on the trucks flows more air than the mustangs. Before the edelbrock, trickflow, holley and other intakes, the truck intake were king! The Trick flow, holley and saleen still use the truck lower intake. So that is good.

A good catback is always nice. 8 years, time to replace the stocker. Get a K&N for sure. headers, dont bother.

The real kicker in the 5.0 motors is the heads. If you want more power, you need new heads. The GT40 or GT40Ps are popular and plentiful. At least the Ps are right now. They will set you back about $600, but will give you easily 30hp. That is the bang for the buck there.

I know this is on the stang motor, but good reading:

For the MAF conversion, get any Mustang or 5.0 magazine off the shelf and browse the ads for the conversion. Also http://www.summitracing.com should have a decent price on that conversion.

Kev,
Try Casper electronic throttle position enhancer part# cei-102014 from summit
It's worth the $89
I've had it on my truck for some time now, with no problems.

Hey Matt,

Will the GT40 heads fit any 5.0 Ford motor? Will the Headers/manifolds still bolt on? Just wondering. I have wanted to buy a new set of heads for my truck but couldn't find the answer to these questions.

im not sure about the answer to this question but i do know that the stock heads on the f-150 302 and the mustang 302 are different. i know because i had a cracked exhaust manifold a couple of months ago and tried one from a 302 off of a mustang (same year as my truck) and the exhaust ports did not align. my guess is that you would probably have to get new headers/manifolds.
