How difficult is it to convert from column shift to a floor mounted shifter on an 1979 F150 with a 302 V8 and 3 speed automatic trans.

Is it a linkage only type project or will a cable drive work as well?

I looked into doing the same thing on my truck and still have it on my "future" list. I contacted Summit Racing and they told me they didn't carry any floor shifters compatable with my transmission (4R70W). But they had several for older trans types such as the C-3, C-4, C-6, ect. If all else fails e-mail some of the manufacturers they are usually more than happy to help. At least in my experience. Good luck!

you should be able to lift just about any floor shifter out of any Ford car and make it work fairly easily. I would do it cable, for sure! Mustang, t-bird even an Escort shifter should work, with a little modification. But, for the least amount of trouble I would go fo those cars that have a like trans (the mustang for instance) and take all the parts for mounting on both ends of the cable. Also be sure not to crimp or crush the cable, and keep it away from the exhaust.
Finally, find a steering column collar for a manual, this way you will not have the shifter hole in the column when you get done.
