I am not sure what size tires you friend had on his truck, but the 3.73 and 31" tires will handle about the same as a 3.55 and 29" tires. So, for your application, go with the 3.73. And, just a note (you probably already know this), don't forget to change the front gears or you will destroy the transfer case and some other things.

Cool

redbeard, My daily driver is a 88 F150 with 4.9 and 5spd. The engine makes tons of torque at low RPM.I run 3.55 gears with 31/10.50/15 BFG. tires and I would recomend 3.55 gears for yours. I think 3.73s would make your engine rev too high at highway speeds, and you might have a hard time finding 3.73s for the front end.

I have a 92 ford F-150 that came with the 3.55 gears and I switched them to the 3.73 gears because I was running 33inch tires . I have the 5.0L engine and the 5 spd manual, but I felt little difference bewteen the two.If you need a place to get gears I found the best prices at West Coast Differential.

I have the 3.55 with 31x10.50's and it does fine. I just bought a boat weighing about 2800 lb and haven't pulled it out of the water with the 31's yet, but for day to day driving, I will stick with the 3.55's. I would recommend going to the 3.73 since you are investing in gears. Someday you may decide to go with larger tires and you don't want to change gears again.
