Found the Noise in Cab - 1990 4x4 Ext.cab
I finally found the loud noise which I posted earlier (sounded like bad knobby tires). I had a bad front wheel bearing(left inboard). Replaced all four bearings & it sounds like a new truck!
1990 F-150 4x4 Supercab SB XLT, 302cid, 5spd manual, 116K miles, Air, Power everything. Bought 8-99 with 99K mi.
Previous owner had a rebuilt short block put in at 95K, but I had to do alot of work to get her where she is now. (The front passenger side outboard disc pad had come completely out on the day I picked it up (Pedal went to the floor just as I entered a major intersection!) so I replaced both calipers.)
So far I've replaced the heater core, steering box, drivers side power door lock actuator, transmission mount, exhaust system & cat converters, EGR pipe (under air intake plenum), both drive shaft U-joints, plus some smaller jobs like broken valve cover bolts, stripped threads, etc.
I've done a tune-up and replaced the O2 sensor, spark plugs (instead of tapered seat plugs, someone? put in the old metal-washer type plugs), wires, cap, & rotor. I adjusted the timing to specs but it still wouldn't run just right. When starting in first gear, you had to give it quite a bit of gas or it would stumble. Once the RPM's were up, it ran fine. This was finally solved last month when I took it to Ford & they did an injector flush. Now she runs fine. I'm convinced that if the previous owner(s) knew what they were doing, I wouldn't have had such a bear (not to mention marital stress). I'm usually good at seeing stuff like this before I buy, but I must have been dreaming of driving her on the beach.
Extras:
31x10.50x15LT Michelins on Z-Racing Alloy Wheels
Catback Duals w/ 3 1/2" Chrome tips
K&N FIPK
Bed Liner
Custom front bench seat w/headrests
Painted Truck Box
Rear bench raised 4"
Kenwood 30W x 4 Stereo w/ Jensen 6x9's in rear panels (quite a job cutting those panels for a guy who's 6'3"!)
Previous Used Fords (With alot less trouble):
1979 Supercab 2WD, 300cid I6, Auto. (wish I still had her!) Sold at 120K mi.
1985 Bronco 4x4, 300cid I6, 4Speed.
