Cool 1985 F150 5.0l EFI (Hello Mike Troyer)

Questions for all, including Mike. First off, Mike, do you have a chip for my truck? Second, can you change the computer for an upgraded one?
Does anyone have the HP/Torque #'s for that model?
How would you do a home-made air-box mod on it?
What type of exhaust would ya'll suggest?
How do I ID the tranny?
Anyone got some GT-40 heads they'd like to give away?
Thanks

Hi Crab,

We do make Superchips for just about every fuel injected computer-controlled Ford truck, including many of the older models, but to tell you for sure, we'll need to know the computer code of your particular vehicle.

To find this code, you'll need to go to the computer itself, and look for the code sticker on it. In those older trucks, these computer codes can be 2,3, or 4 digits long. The computer on most 1996 & older F-trucks is usually located behind the Driver's kick panel, so just pull that panel, and then read the sticker on the computer, and get back to us, by email would be best for quickest response I would suggest. Let us know if you have any problems finding the code.

If memory serves, I think the stock rating on that early 5.0 is 175 hp, don't remember the torque#'s.

With regards as to how to do a home-made airbox mod, that's pretty easy, you just drop in a K&N air filter element, and then drill holes in the airbox. However, I don't suggest cutting holes in those factory airboxes, as they aren't cheap to replace, so you might just want to go with the drop-in K&N air filter for now, it's up to you.

For the exhaust, there are about as many options as there are manufacturers, so you might want to take look in the F-150 Online Store where those items are carried. Basically, you replace the portion of the exhauast from just behind the catalytic convertes on back, and that's called a "cat-back" exhaust system.

You most likely have the AOD transmission if it's an automatic, but I can't tell you how to "ID" it, as I'm personally more familiar with the 4R70W's & the 4R100's, so perhaps someone else can help with that.

Good luck!

crab,

I did some heavy drilling on my stock airbox. I am looking into making a ram air setup similar to the Johnny Lightning kit. You may want to check with S&B filters, I think they make an open element for the double intake tube trucks. Mine is a '95 with mass air so it has a single tube.

I have a Gibson cat back, single side swept. Good mid range torque gains, no low end loss. It's one of the more quiet systems.

As far as the heads go.... If I had some GT-40s they would be going on my truck! If you are seriously looking for some try over at corral.net .

Thanks ya'll. Didn't get to 'plumb' my truck's airbox last night, had to plumb the damn kitchen sink, anyway... What's a Johnny lightning kit?

The "Johnny Lightning" kit is made by one of the Lightning tuners. It uses a cone type filter, but has filter media at the end rather than a cap.

On the Lightning kits it has a scoop and some plumbing that feeds through the inner fenderwell. Then there is a fitting that goes over the end of the filter.

It seems this would be the best of both worlds.... a good cold air supply but plenty of filter media exposed so if demand is greater than the cool air supply there is very little restriction.

On my truck there is a hole in the metal just to the right of the radiator. With some ducting it would be fairly easy to plumb in a good cool air scoop.

Cool

CRAB- your 85 is one of the first FI.5.0s and your computer is probably located under the dash just above the trans. tunnel. It should be in a bracket bolted to the firewall. Hope this helps!!

I do recall the dealership taking the EEC out of my 85 many years ago. I think it was mounted in the dash behind the radio but could have been on the firewall.
