Question Should I buy? high mileage 92 xlt lariat?

I am looking at a one owner 92 lariat, w/171K? It looks to be in excellent condition and well taken care of. It has a leaking rear main seal. And needs new tires.
It has the 302 engine w/auto.

So what kind of repairs should I expect from a truck with this mileage?

They are asking 4000. If I have to do a rebuilt on motor/trans there goes 2000. So what do you all think go or no go?????

thanks...jim

If the truck is in good all around shape, and you don't mind putting a little work into it, should have no problems. It's still worth about $11,000 retail if its 4x4. If its only 2x4, I might reconsider, but still a fair price. A lot of people on this site will attest to these rigs going well over 200K. I didn't blink twice at buying mine at 85,000 miles.

you might consider a timing chain and a $15 code scanner for trouble with those old sensors. I replaced a couple throttle position sensors in that amount of miles. the rest of the engine should be OK if it was taken care of at all.

Cool

I bought a 1990 F-150 4X4 ext cab long box for $2000 that had low oil pressure and 125000 miles on it. The truck drove really good, so I bought it, put a fresh motor in it, rebuilt the front susp. and have been happy with it ever since. I have around $4000 in it, and just turned down more to sell it. Just as a note, I have a 1987 Grand Marquis with the EFI 302 and it has 289300 miles on it. It still runs and drives good. Don't worry about miles if it's been taken care of.

If its looks well taken care in most cases it has and has many more miles to go yet it should go at least 250k before an engine rebuild may be needed if then.

If you ask me sounds go if it is a fourwheel drive. I have the same truck with 215k miles on it and have done just regular maintence and very little serious probelms
