Question Horse Trailer Towing

I have a '95 Extracab, automatic, with 8' bed, 351 cu in V8, factory trailer tow package, electronic brake controller, Cat III hitch, and trailer tow package. I have just bought a horse (my first) and I am going to buy a horse trailer to haul him back and forth from training lessons and shows. Is there anything I should know before I ruin my truck. I have heard that the transmission may over heat. How often should the transmission oil be changed when doing alot of towing (40 mlies, twice a week). Thanks in advance for your advice and opinions.

Cool

I wouldn't worry too much. With the trailer tow package you should have gotten a tranny cooler included stock. Just keep it locked out of OD and have fun. If you just bought it, check and make sure the tranny fluid looks good,if not, change it. Just check it regularly & if it discolors, change.

I pulled my Arabian from New Mexico to Georgia last summer with my 1991 F-150. 302 and automatic, with 3.55 axle. No problems with the truck, although I recently replaced the exhaust manifolds (cracked, but may have been due more to age than anything.)

Averaged 65mph and 9mpg. Handled hills just fine. Hopefully your 351 will get better mileage.

I have pulled all over New Mexico with the truck, including mountains. Does just fine. Your 351W should do quite well. I don't even have the towing package (lack the radiator, added overloads and HD shocks, with stab bars and radiator coming.)

The previous owner of my truck hauled a gooseneck with it.

G'luck,
-Mike
