Post Power Upgrades

Do they make power upgrades for my 90 F-150 4X4 with the 351? Maybe chips or other bolt-on power-adders? I use it to tow my race car and am always looking for more HP. How about a spacer for the throttle body?

You can get just about anything you want as far as bolt ons go. Intake, exhaust, ignition, blowers, chips, etc.

Most people I know tend to go with intake and exhaust first. I did my ignition before the exhaust, but either way you go it will add up.

I haven't heard much positive about the throttle body spacers. You might want to do a search to get more input on them. If it were my $100, I'd get a set of pulleys or put the money towards intake or exhaust.

Hi Drg racr,

Yes, we make Superchips for just about all fuel-injected computer controlled Fords (and many other models as well), just give us a shout via email or phone and we'll be happy to get you the details of the Superchip application for your 1990 5.8 (351).

I would agree with Signmaster that the throttle body spacers do little to aid in towing.

The top 3 best bang-for-the-buck mods for your truck are:

1.) Optimize the powertrain programming with the Superchip - the maximum rated gains at sea level on your 1990 351 are 18-20 hp & 27-34 lbs./ft. of torque, depending on whether you have the 180 hp or the 200 hp (stock) version of the 351. This product is available directly from us, so please contact us via email or phone for all the details, our contact info is just below.

2.) Reduce restriction in the air intake tract, using one of the various airbox elimination kits, like the K&N FIPK kit. They are worth about 12 hp or so on those 351's. Those are available from the F-150 Online Store, which you can access by clicking on the link at the top left of your screen here that says "Online Store". If you don't see the one for your vehicle listed, you can call the gentleman who runs it, at 916-361-2510, his name is Roger Lemere.

3.) Reduce restriction in the exhaust, using a good aftermarket cat-back exhaust system. You'll see about a 10-12 hp gain from a good aftermarket system, and those too, are available in the Online Store. We would suggest using the Gibson "swept side" model, as it's specifically flow-engineered for towing. You don't have to do any towing to take advantage of this, it's basically designed so that you don't lose low-rpm torque on part-throttle while gaining higher-rpm horsepower like some cat-back systems do.

Since it's a little bit older vehicle, you might also want to take a look at upgrading the ignition system, as least make sure you have good low-resistance aftermarket plug wires and good fresh plugs, and a hotter coil, etc., since you're a racer, you know what to do here I'm sure.

You can do all of these mods in any order you like, we've just listed them in order of power gained per dollar spent, or "bang-for-the-buck".

If you'd like to go over any of this in detail, feel free to give us a shout, & good luck with your truck and your race car this season!
