Who has done rear main seal on 5spd F150?
Mine is leaking bad, time to replace it. Is lifting the tranny a 1 person or 2 person job? Any shortcuts/tricks to the removal/install? I've done this many times on my 89 Mustang and am able to lift that tranny into place by myself (6', 230lbs). I need to know if I should plan to have another set of hands AND if there are any tricks I should do. I've never done a hydraulic clutch, is it straightforward? I need to look at my Chiltons when I get home.. you know how accurate those things are.. Jerry
Speaking from experience, get someone to help. It isn't that hard of a job, but just last week, I was doing a clutch on a 95 Chevy 1/2 ton 4x4 myself and while lowering the transmission on the jack, it rolled off the jack. It was only about 1 1/2 feet off the ground, but the bell housing broke and so did the main casing of the transmission. I don't think it should have broken that badly from that short of a fall, but we all know how weakly those Chevy's are built!
Luckily I was able to find a used bell housing from a junk yard, but am still looking for the rest. Anyway the point is better safe than sorry.
