Question 1995 F150 8.8 axle - 28 or 31 splines?

I've got a '95 F150 w/302 and 3.31 open rearend that I'll be ordering a posi unit for soon. I need to know, is it a 28- or 31-spline axle? It's the original axle, for clarification. The axle code on the door jamb is 17.

Thanks!

To answer my own question (and in case anyone else wondered), it's 31.

What was the part number of the posi unit you ordered? Thanks, this info WAS helpful, I want to do the same thing.. Do you know how to interpret all the axle codes? Obviously 17 = 3.31.. what about 3.08 and 3.55? I know it has to have a letter in it to be Limited Slip, mine doesn't though.. Thx. JerryK

I'll have to look at work tomorrow to find that part number. I haven't ordered yet; I plan to in mid to late Feb. ($$$).

As for the codes, if you're crazy like me and spend the $300 or so to collect all the Ford shop manuals (powertrain, body/chassis, emissions/OBD I/OBD II, EVTM), the codes are right in the book. A 3.08 is 18, LS is H8; 3.55 19, LS is H9. I didn't buy all the books at once, though, just as I needed them.

Question

Do you know if a 3.55 open rearend is also 31, I'm looking to do the same within the next year and figured I'd ask as long as the topic was up. My truck is also a 95 with the original axle.

And off hand does any know if Ford put 3.73 gears in any F-150's between 92-95

Thanks
Andy

According to the guy at Randy's, all the '95s (F150s) are 31 splines. You can 3.73 gears, but I don't think they were available originally. According to my '95 brochure, and the online Kelly Blue Book printout that I got when I was shopping for mine (back in '95), you had a choice between 3.31 or 3.55, both with or without LS. Lightnings came only with a 4.10 LS. The '95 powertrain/drivetrain manual lists codes for many others, but that list also includes F250, F350, Super Duty, Bronco, and motorhome chassis.

Oh, BTW JerryK, Randy's part number for the TrueTrac is 913311, price $350.

When I ordered my 95' new from the factory I searched high and low to get higher than 3.55 gears, you can not. I think Sharkins hit it on the head, you couldn't get our trucks with taller than 3.55 unless it were the lightning. As for what you can put in there.. ANY 8.8 ring/pinion gear will work.

FYI: there is an advertiser in Muscle Mustangs and Fast Fords advertising take-out truck trak-loc units for $199. I am on the road and don't have a rag in front of me to give you the name but thought I'd give a heads up in case anyone is interested.

How about shaft size? It looks like they can be 7/8 or 3/4. I have a '95 F150 4wd 351 with 3.55 gears. I was looking at the powertrax no-slip and they offer both. Thanks
