Cool Brakes - Larger or Different ???

I am thinking about upgrading my brakes but I don't wish to spend alot of cash on this. On the front I have about 1/2" to 3/4" between the brake caliper and the inside edge of the rim. On the back, there is about an inch of room between the drum and the inside edge of the rim. I know that sport truck guys go to discs on each corner but are they any better than stock. A guy told me that I should go to a complete drum system because with the drum system, you have a larger braking surface (area of drum brake pad compared to area of disc brake pad). I also know that the new trucks have got dual piston disc brakes on all 4 corners, so what gives. Anybody do this and what are your thoughts on this subject?

Stick with the disc/drumpackage. Rear discs are real nice but real expensive and don't give you a lot more EXCEPT when towing. With a trailer on the back they are a big plus. Front discs ae better than drums in all sorts of ways, I wouldn't be without them. Our discs are a bit marginal though. The best upgrade I know of is a set of PFC "Z" pads. Much better stopping and pedal modulation. I have not found a caliper upgrade for the pre-97s.

Cool

Thanks for the reply, it has been hard to get answer on some of my questions lately.
Who makes the PFC "Z" pads, I have never heard to those before. I am slowly catching up on all of these aftermarket names by hanging around Neal "The HP Freak" & JMC but have never heard of those.
